## Backlink audit and link data guides, by tool

### Ahrefs backlink audit guide

Ahrefs' own guide, [How to Do a Basic Backlink Audit (in Under 30 Minutes)](https://ahrefs.com/blog/backlink-audit/) (dated 26 February 2020), has three steps: a high-level view of the profile, a deeper look, then the full backlinks report. It also advises downloading link data from every source available, including Google Search Console, Majestic and Moz. bklink's [backlink audit framework](https://bklink.uk/blog/backlink-audit-framework) builds on the same idea, and [DR vs DA](https://bklink.uk/blog/dr-vs-da-difference) explains what Ahrefs' Domain Rating measures.

### Moz link audit guide

Moz's Link Explorer is one of the independent link indexes bklink's [audit framework](https://bklink.uk/blog/backlink-audit-framework) recommends reconciling with Search Console's Links report. [DR vs DA](https://bklink.uk/blog/dr-vs-da-difference) explains how Moz's Domain Authority is built and why it is not interchangeable with Ahrefs' Domain Rating.

### SEMrush backlink audit guide

[Semrush Backlink Audit vs an Independent Link Audit](https://bklink.uk/blog/semrush-vs-independent-backlink-audit) covers what the tool does: it pulls from Semrush's own database, can add Search Console, Analytics and Majestic, scores toxic markers and exports a disavow file. It also answers how to access the tool and how long an audit takes. Semrush's own instructions are on its [Backlink Audit help page](https://www.semrush.com/kb/295-backlink-audit-tool).

### Google Search Central disavow links guide

Google's rules are on its Search Central help page [Disavow links to your site](https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/2648487). bklink's [disavow tool page](https://bklink.uk/disavow-tool) summarises them: the file format, that a new upload replaces the old list, that the tool needs a URL-prefix property, and Google's advice that most sites will not need it. [Detecting unnatural links without over-disavowing](https://bklink.uk/blog/unnatural-link-detection) covers when it is worth doing.

### Moz backlink audit guide

For a full audit, bklink's [27-check backlink audit checklist](https://bklink.uk/blog/backlink-audit-checklist) covers inventory, authority, spam and toxicity, technical attribution and opportunity, each with a stated red flag. Moz's Domain Authority fits the authority check, with the caveat that it is not a Google ranking factor.

### Majestic link intelligence guide

Majestic's [Help Centre](https://majestic.com/help/faq) says Trust Flow "represents the authority of a link" and Citation Flow "represents the popularity of a link", and that Flow Metric scores are meant to be one part of a link analysis. Its Neighbourhood Checker lists the sites hosted on the same IP and subnet as a domain; bklink's [backlink intelligence explained](https://bklink.uk/blog/backlink-intelligence-explained) uses that to show co-hosting is checkable.

This pillar maps that shift at a high level and points to a dedicated post covering each piece in depth. This post covers that reporting and QA stack, including the specific check every agency needs before an authority score reaches a client (is it really Ahrefs' DR, really Moz's DA, or a marketplace's own score), API/bulk export needs at volume, and a pre-delivery workflow for catching dead or stale links before a client does. This piece covers who should own the audit process, how to set a documented cadence instead of running one-off cleanups, and how to keep an evidence log so decisions don't get re-litigated every time staff or agencies turn over. It also covers why large, multi-property enterprise domains draw more of the scaled, low-quality link schemes covered elsewhere on this blog. This post lays out evidence-led link filtering: combining hosting trust evaluation with traffic estimates, indexation checks, content originality, and editorial signals into a documented, tiered verdict, and building agency reports that show a client the specific evidence behind every flagged or cleared link rather than a bare pass/fail label. This piece breaks down what that tool genuinely does well, where cross-checking Search Console's Links report and a second index like Ahrefs Site Explorer actually changes the outcome, and when each approach is the right call. This piece breaks the process into 27 checks across five groups — inventory, authority, spam and toxicity, technical attribution, and competitive opportunity — each with a stated red flag so a reviewer knows exactly what they're looking for and why. This piece builds a repeatable framework, inventory, risk classification, quality scoring, action plan, and covers how audit scope and frequency should change between a 50-page site and a 50,000-page one. This guide covers what those tools actually score under the hood, where free and paid options genuinely diverge, and the false-positive patterns that make a raw toxicity number worth investigating rather than acting on directly. This piece separates the link-quality signals that actually correlate with penalty or ranking risk from the ones that are mostly SEO folklore, then walks through when to request removal, when to disavow, and when the correct move is to leave a link alone. A handful of links from recognized financial publishers outweighs a much larger batch of generic guest posts. DA (Domain Authority) is Moz's separate 0-100 score. They're built from different link indexes and different formulas, so the same site can show very different DR and DA numbers — and neither one is a Google ranking factor.
